**pHILOSOPHY ON lEADERSHIP** Philosophy- The Rational Investigation Of Truth, Principles Of Being, Knowledge or Conduct- In the inspiring movie, INVICTUS of 2009, Morgan Freeman plays the stellar role of President Nelson Mandela of South Africa while Matt Damon dresses himself in the robes of Francois Pienaar, skipper of the Springbok Rugby team. In this Movie, Nelson Mandela invites the Springbok Rugby Team Captain over a cup of Tea. The world cup is a year away n the fledgling Springbok Team needs motivation. During the conversation, the president addresses the Captain, “Tell me Francois, about your philosophy on leadership? This is a ‘torch-brand’ question that rolls on the heads of every leader in his sphere of the world. The solutions these two flesh out would shape the destiny of a Nation. This philosophy propels them to dictate a hard poignant decision that guide the springbok team taste victory, a year later. Leadership philosophy is the blueprint for n to lead one’s life, one’s business n treating others. “Everything rises and falls on leadership”. This is experienced everyday in Organizations that succeed n go under too. We also hear in the cases of Sportsmen, Politicians n for any one in their walks of life. What one learns from the movie, INVICTUS? We notice philosophical ideas which were instrumental n adapted to get the Springboks motivated in a way to smell Victory later. Let’s observe. By Example- The Springbok skipper was a great believer in himself to set an example to inspire his team. This always has been the strong underlying fundamentals for Leadership. Thomas Morrell says, “FIRST GREAT GIFT WE CAN BESTOW IS A GOOD EXAMPLE’’. When one leads his team by an example, he doesn’t set s himself above everyone but, at par. This could be a little risky, as his every move is observed not from afar but up close. Yet it is very effective. Inspiration- The President of South Africa asked the Captain, “How do we inspire ourselves to greatness when nothing less will do? How do we inspire everyone around us?” In this scenario the foremost thing more important than the question is the Goal before the Captain- WIN the World Title. But he is aware that the work [task] cut out for him n winning the Title is NOT THAT EASY. The way ahead would be long riddles with objectives n rooted with an unpleasant n ugly too past if allowed to remain so, would further jeopardize their dream. The Team needs motivation cum inspiration to perform their best what many considered, a difficult task. You too would notice n find it when attached to a dream goal that expects nothing less than greatness. When You determine what you desire/want, THINK, YOU HAVE MADE the most important decision of your life! You have to know what you ‘desire’ to attain it. Inspiration is the FUEL you need to scale your goals. Using The Work Of Others Nelson Mandela said, he had experienced inspiration from William Ernest Henley’s ‘Invictus’ n how that poem encouraged him in his darkest hours. From the closing lines of the poem one can understand how the words transformed Mandela n to keep faith in them. “It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. As one considers his leadership philosophy, he should also consider his source of inspiration. May be it is drawn from the inspired works of great authors, or the words of a Poet, a Mentor, even Music or any other sources, find them n be inspired. Lead by example. Inspire others. Put into commission all the endeavors of other successful Leaders as pieces of encouragement to become and create LEADERS of DESTINY! Get me Steve! Ganovasan Coppell 5/11/2013
