pace in a Suitcase: Astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s Roving Mission! Today, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen will remotely pilot a prototype of a lunar rover at the Canadian Space Agency’s analogue terrain to kick off the “Space in a Suitcase” technology demonstration. The goal of the project is to determine the best, most intuitive ways for an astronaut to command a helper rover from a base on the surface of the Moon. As its name hints, Space in a Suitcase is a portable rover command kit that will enable Jeremy to operate any of the CSA’s rovers from anywhere in the world. Using on-board cameras and data, he’ll guide the rover through a series of obstacles with a slight communications delay (varying between 1-3 seconds) and very limited bandwidth (try 100 kbps!) to simulate the real-time communications challenges between the Earth and the Moon. And, to make the simulation even more realistic, we won’t even let him peek at the terrain until his mission is complete! Stay tuned this week for updates and photos of Jeremy’s newest mission!
