Uga dudu pameran pesindhen. Pesindhen lan siwaswara kuwi kudu nyengkuyung pagelaran wayang. Ora nggugu karepe dhewe. Aku pancen duwe pesindhen ayu, swarane kung, sing malah sok diuber-uber ora mung diuber penonton, malah uga dhalange dhewe. Nanging sing baku, pagelaran iku pagelaran wayang, dudu pagelaran pesindhen….” A wayang performance is not a sindhen performance. And its also not a sindhen exhibition. The vocalists should be supporting the wayang performance. Not just over there doing what they like. And sure, I have pretty sindhen with beautiful voices, who are often obsessed over/gawked at by the audiences and sometimes by the dhalang as well. But the important thing is, the performance is about wayang, not pesindhen. Although Ki Nartasabda is credited with starting the whole dhalang-sindhen interaction skits on stage during interludes, and although he is also credited with altering the position of the pesindhen from in front of the drummer to over to the side facing the dhalang, perpendicular to the debog, he was not in favor of wayang that was so focused on pesindhen attractions and insisted that the focus should be the wayang. Luckily, quite a number of famous dhalang hold his view as well, to this day! I sometimes feel sorry for the sindhen and their current position on stage (altered again from the Ki Nartasabda position to the New Order position facing the audience and covering up the simpingan!). I dont see how they can stay up all night without being able to see the wayang (without getting crooks in their necks at least). Instrumentalists, in my experience, keep very close tabs on whats happening in the lakon and can usually speak in an informed way about details of sanggit--not just simple plot--after the wayang. For the pesindhen, at best if they really concentrate, they may as well be listening to an audio recording! Especially from Gara-gara through to the end when the true and inti part of the lakon really unfolds.
