part of our UKIP EDUCATION POLICY FOR NORTHERN IRELAND UKIP Supports flexible school retention numbers for rural schools. UKIP Northern Ireland supports a flexible approach to the number of pupils required to keep schools open in rural areas. We recognise demographics change at a different pace in rural areas and to that end, the standard approach of pupils needed to retain a school is not fit for purpose. If a school falls below a certain threshold of attendance, the school must be afford adequate time, and a range of options including ‘school federations’ to remain sustainable. It is wrong to close schools and force substantial numbers of pupils to travel great distances, lengthening their school day and creating unnatural catchment areas. The pupil, the community and the societal integrity must come before barenaked figures on a balance sheet. UKIP Supports free Primary and Secondary Education . UKIP Northern Ireland supports free education in Northern Ireland, from Preschool to High School graduation. Our policy supports free choice, free classes, free books and free transport to and from school if the pupil is outside the statutory walking distance. The attempts by the Northern Ireland Executive to introduce excessive transport charges for rural and sub-urban pupils is unacceptable and will place unnecessary burdens on parents already struggling with increasing cost of living expenses.
