phoon Haiyan is no more, this storm has dissipated and is now being sheared across southern china. In the storms wake some of the most horrific damage I have ever covered as a Meteorologist. This is including Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast. Zoraida Sat The Philippines have been the worst hit and today on Monday four days after landfall the full light of the situation has still not been seen due to a blocked roads to some isolated communities. We do know that wide swaths of the east coast of Visayas has been devastated. As of now the official death toll is over 1,500 but with debris still scattered this number is feared to climb much much higher. A surge of relief has been sent to the country in response to this crisis. The latest development is the USS George Washington which was in Hong Kong relatively close to the disaster. It is now enroute to the Philippines to head towards the hardest hit areas according to the Military News Paper Stars and Stripes. Still much more is needed. You can help by donating to a slew of agencies but the one I would recommend is the Philippine Red Cross. You can find to donation link in the top right of this page. Westpacwx has pushed all our adsense money over the past week towards relief. We encourage everyone else with a little extra money to do the same. Today the main topic though is the new Tropical Depression over Mindanao in the Southern Philippines. This storm named Zoraida by PAGASA is by far much weaker than Haiyan yet it still is bringing foul weather to the southern Philippines. The main threat will be heavy rainfall across the southern half of the country brought in by easterly winds along the north edge of the storms circulation. Samar and Leyte some of the worst hit areas following Haiyan / Yolanda could receive heavy rainfall and gale force winds near the coast throughout the day on Tuesday. The good news is that by Tuesday night this storm will move west ushering in improving conditions behind it. At this time numerous locations are under signal force one. You can find them at the PAGASA tab at this link. Still, given the fact that thousands remain homeless following the storms wrath even a little bit of foul weather could bring harsh conditions to the region. The risk of further flooding will also be a threat across much of Visayas as some areas see up to 150-200mm of rainfall. After the Philippines Zoraida shows the potential to intensify further by late in the week and possibly impact Vietnam.
