A unique worldwide partnership, IUCN brings together states, government agencies & NGO members, & some 10,000 scientists & experts from 181 countries in a global web of networks to provide a neutral forum for dialogue & action on environment & sustainable development issues. The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation has been created in 2000 with the objective to develop the cooperation for conservation and sustainable use of resources in the region. IUCN-Med is also responsible for the North Africa Programme. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Terms of Reference, Maternity-leave substitution. Programme Officer for the Marine Programme IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, Malaga, Spain Specific tasks and responsibilities As a general support to the Marine Programme, the Programme Officer will: • Support the Marine Coordinator in developing fundraising proposals and organise other assessment and training sessions as requested. • Develop and support regional initiatives and projects for the conservation of marine biodiversity and the implementation of the work programme related to maritime protected areas. • Ensure that projects and initiatives are implemented in a timely and effective manner and successfully achieve the set objectives and results. • Communicate the results of the Programme to relevant regional partners, Conventions, IUCN members and stakeholders, through the website or the preparation of specific information documents. • Report on project activities on a regular basis, or as required by IUCN or donors. • Undertake other tasks/emerging issues at the request of the Head of the Marine Programme and Director to ensure the effective implementation of the programme. More specifically, within the frame of the existing activities, the following task are considered: • Contribute to the development of Project Pegaso (People for Ecosystem Based Governance in Assessing Sustainable Development of Ocean and Coast) to build on existing capacities and develop common novel approaches to support integrated policies for the coastal, marine and maritime realms of the Mediterranean Sea and the implementation of the ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean. Particularly, the production of a brochure of participation methods in the case studies of the project and the e-newsletters. • Contribute to the development and implementation of the project Life Posidonia Andalucia to organise a regional workshop on marine seagrasses, the development of technical reports on protected areas and activities and the finalisation of a virtual library. • Support the preparation of an Atlas of seagrasses in Spain in collaboration with other partners and institutions. • Support, on request, the species programme to prepare the necessary documentation required for the Mediterranean Red List Assessment of marine species. REQUIREMENTS • University degree in Marine Biology, Ecology, Marine Science or any related field • Knowledge on marine species conservation (Red Lists, seagrasses, species/critical habitat assessments, invasive species, etc.) or ecosystem ecology • Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills needed • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English. A good understanding of French or other Mediterranean language is an asset • Ability to work flexibly and with initiative, in a team and in a multicultural context • Very good skills in use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point and database management APPLICATIONS Applicants are requested to apply online through the HR Management System, by opening the vacancy announcement and pressing the "Apply" button.
