please just look at this and think of your horse. Start them a little later, as you can see the back can take up to 6 years to set. You can still do so much with them, bombproofing is so important - take a few months in doing that, go for long walks, teach the whoa that everytime you stop, eventually you can stop your horse instantly in an emergency, Teach them to stand ! Bit them correctly, not just shoving the bit in the mouth, teach them to yield to it, and be soft with it, not pulling their head in, so they learn to lean on it. just do the basics all through their 3rd year and then when their 4th birthday comes around, they will be so much easier to teach, calmer and more confident. I can say all this with my hand on my heart as Ive done it all, and learned, heard the excuse, oh he will be too strong when hes four, believe me you train them right and its much much easier. horses cant express pain by chatting to you and saying oh my back is hurting today, they buck refuse to go forward, bite, try everything not to have the pain. Please just think about them, and not the first show of the season. Aim for the last !!
