post by Michael Bishop / ! \ Soapbox Warning / ! \ I was driving from Midtown to South City last night after STL Ruby Group. I stopped off at the QuickTrip at Vandeventer and Chouteau. The place was surrounded by police. Half of the shop was boarded up. Inside was at least 20+ cops. One of the younger cops was bouncing up and down, trying to psyche himself up, you know, like the way a boxer does. He was chanting in the huddle Bring on the peaceful protestors. I want to make a couple of observations here. First, some points. 1. I understand an officers job is extremely difficult. 2. I cant imagine what it would be like to have to face a horde of complete strangers and not knowing their intent. 3. We are all humans and we are all emotional beings. Having spent most of my life in some sort of leadership role, I want to say how little good leadership I see in all of this. If that kind of attitude was exhibited in my ranks, I would smack him over the head and remind him where he is and what his job is. I would ask him to check that attitude at the door or to not come back. I would try very hard to keep his psychology in check. I would not let him descend into the weakest position he could take in that battle, that position being the protagonist. I wouldnt let him firstly for his own sake, but secondarily for what his attitude would produce in practice. Attitudes infect groups, this is a fact. From what artifacts I am able to pick up here and there, the leadership is just not there.
