presents Scarecrows (1988). A gang of thieves get away with millions from a military base payroll on a small plane, taking the pilot and his daughter hostage. When one of the group gets greedy and parachutes out with more than his share, they touch down in a large cornfield to reclaim the loot. But the abandoned farmhouse they hole up in seems to be watched over by an army of scarecrows with the ability to animate themselves and kill! If you see one killer scarecrow movie...well, it should probably be the popular TV movie Dark Night of the Scarecrow with Charles Durning and Larry Drake. But running a close second is this low budget effort from first time director William Wesley (aka Jose Rolando Rodriguez!). Its a pretty assured debut with some impressive gore effects and decent acting but the real achievement here is the way the film makes the scarecrows a real threat. For less than $500,000, Wesley creates a sense of palpable dread and anxiety. The film was shot in Florida and Cuban born Wesley didnt direct another feature for 13 years.
