prioritise Women victims of Symphysiotomy Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has called on the Minister for Health James Reilly to prioritise as a matter of urgency the victims of symphysiotomy. The Sinn Féin leader has received a PQ response from the Minister on this issue in which Dr. Reilly says that he intends “bringing proposals to government in the coming weeks.” Mr. Adams said: “The 200 women who were victim of the barbaric practice of symphysiotomy deserve the same concern; the same right to compensation and health service support and legal protections, as those women who suffered at the hands of Michael Neary. Minister Reilly’s refusal to publish the Walsh report until the government has decided what it will do on this issue is unacceptable. The Minister should publish the terms of reference for the Judge and for the mediation process he plans establishing for the women affected by symphysiotomy. This should include a fixed and short timeframe for the mediation process to take place. It is important to recall that many of these women are now very elderly and further delays will deny some of them justice.”
