pulled from class? basically, jesus was likely middle eastern with maybe slightly more olive skin tone than this young man. religious figures as halloween costumes is edgy, i can understand that people would react. but see, you are not allowed to use your ridiculous judgements about something completely not-harmful to pull someone out of school. if it was a day where dressing up in a costume was allowed, this young man dressed up in a costume. does the costume harm -- anyone? no. does the costume inspire interesting discussion, possibly even debate about the origins of an important religious figure -- why yes! ok so that means: its a good costume not a bad one. i think that high school probably had enough vampires, witches, and people who put sheets over their heads. because -- vampires (people that supposedly eat and kill human beings and also drink their blood) -- that is not offensive. oh and neither is walking around like the living dead with fake blood all over your body. a young man dressed up as jesus -- now that -- thats offensive! ok look, its true -- he is not in a religious orden -- he is not ordained -- monasteries do have rules and you cant just go around claiming to have gained admission into a club without actually being a member of that club (i am talking about monks), but its halloween -- everyone knows that if you dress up as the president, for example, that you are not saying i am the president for real. man and of course jesus had dark skin tone. ugh. people just trippin. anyway, the legal issue that i see is: is it even vaguely legal for the HS staff to pull this young man from school for doing something they find offensive? the answer to that, is a clear: NO. it is not illegal to go to H.S. on halloween, dressed up as a religious figure. if it is not illegal: it is allowed. therefore: disciplinary measures must be taken to either dock the pay of the staff members who removed this student from school, or to teach them appropriate, legal, behavior.
