rebirth of an artist. My father has always been a lover of the arts. He started early as a young child in the humble city of Car-car, Cebu. He soon found himself as an understudy of national artist Martino Abellana who taught my father the basic principles of painting. Financial hardships, however, forced my father to pursue a different path. He pursued a degree in architecture, and soon found himself in rattan furniture management both in the Philippines and abroad. He returned to the Philippines for good in the year 1991. He started going back to art painting using watercolor and oil as his main media. He produced approximately 24 paintings of which he sold half as he kept half for display in our house. Unfortunately, disaster struck. A house fire burned our house and left 85% of the structure charred and burned sparing only 3 of his artwork. Between 2002-2014 Papa re-emerged in architecture. With Gods grace, despite his rather advance age; Papa was able to design houses, motels/hotels/condos during that time span. He also managed to fit in apostolic and volunteer work for the church. Time spent with painting was sparse. Then, he found himself in the other side of the world. Here in Tavares Florida, USA; where time was aplenty and seclusion was the daily norm. His eyes sparkled at the sight of Hobby Lobbys enormous variety of art supplies. He painted. Acrylic, oil and watercolor. It didnt matter. He painted more. He painted in abstract. He painted in an impressionist style. I never seen him so productive in the field of arts. I provided him with a fool proof push one button printer so he can print pictures that he liked. He took photos. A lot of photos. He painted more. I have seen a rebirth. His visit here made him discover that this is something he had always loved. I asked him today. Pa, will you still paint when you go back to the Philippines? Im done with construction. Im going back and Im painting again. What blessing to be able to round out your life with your first love.
