Shaka Movement’s Official Election Statement: On this historic day, we celebrate this victory for the ‘Aina brought forth by the people for the people. We celebrate all who have come before us, from across all races and all cultures of Maui County and throughout the state, who have today united as a single voice in protecting the keiki and the ‘aina for current and future generations. This Initiative was only the beginning. With increased awareness we have the opportunity for a real dialog around this and many more issues. This was an important first step for all us to find a new way of self-governing, where when the people lead, the leaders shall follow. In the coming months, as the truth of the chemical industry’s $8 million dollar advertising campaign is revealed, the people will rise up in even greater solidarity and strength, to protect our children and our environment.. We give thanks for all that have come before us to make this day possible. The Shaka Movement stands proud as one of the many vehicles that has helped bring the voice of the people to the forefront of our community’s awareness. We give thanks to all the citizens who selflessly gave countless hours doing everything they could to honor the mandate to protect Hawaii’s natural resources, which our ancestors insisted on being included in our state Constitution, and for everyone being living examples of our Aloha way of life. Thank you.
