rescued from a junk shop in Austin for 25 bucks, this heavily - TopicsExpress

rescued from a junk shop in Austin for 25 bucks, this heavily water-damaged quarto contains a manual for how to administer the sacraments. Written by Miguel Venegas, an 18th century Jesuit historian, this is LIKELY the second edition (printed 1783) of a text originally published in Mexico in 1731. Despite suffering the indignity of being tossed in a puddle of water for days (my best guess is flood damage), the text block itself is surprisingly intact, with only signatures Vv though Yy having come loose. the best part is the text itself, which contains a number of glyphs cast for use in catholic texts during the hand-press period; here the ℞ symbol (that we normally associate with the word prescription) is used to denote the response passages, and i think the cross pattée might signify other aspects of service instruction (im wondering if this is direction for the officiant to cross himself). best christmas ive ever gotten for myself :)
