rottentomatoes/m/spongebob_squarepants_movie/ Contains SPOILERS. I have a headache, so, Im going to make this short. I just finished watching The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, released in 2004. Based off of the beloved underwater adventures of the bubbly yellow Krusty Krab fry cook of the same name that has been entertaining people since 1999. Nickelodeon just announced that a sequel is coming out Feb. 6th, 2015. I feel like the declining quality of the series truly began with this flick. Disregarding established (Like Spongebob driving without a license, being able to breathe on land) continuity to allow the plot to move forward, inconsistencies within the narrative, major secondary characters reduced to a cameo or a few spoken lines (Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy arent even in any of the crowd scenes: theyre on a poster, one time! I hope Sandys not one of your favorite characters because she gets um, two lines, yeah. SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton are the only characters from the show to have large roles in this motion picture, thats all), utilizing too much above the water elements, over-usage of how convenient moments during important scenes (Such as how Dennis is defeated and during the predictable fake demise sequence), kay build-up which results in an unsatisfactory climax and conclusion. Thankfully, Plankton is there to save this sinking ship. Hes the best part and theres a lot of him onscreen. Of course, Im probably bias since hes one of my favorite characters, along with Squidward and Sandy. Like the failure that is all of Seths animated stuff, some of the jokes go on far too long or just arent funny in the first place. Yet, sometimes, oddly, the gags are right on point: not often enough though. I especially liked the pop culture ones (burps sounding like Barney Gumbles from The Simpsons and The Goofy Goober Rock being a parody of the Twisted Sister song I Wanna Rock). Ultimately, I suppose it is still fun to watch once in a great while. Maaaybe. Ahem, why wasnt Patchy the Pirate ever seen instead of some random pirate crew (meta-humor) instead?! P.S. Spongebobs creator Stephen Hillenburg has stated that this flick takes place after the TV series. So, Spongebob doesnt have his license still...? Huh?
