“sat eva soumya idam agra aaseet ekam eva advidiiyam…” Sankaracarya explains, “The word ‘sat’ means mere Existence, a thing that is subtle, without distinction, all pervasive, one, taintless, partless, consciousness, which is known from all the Upanishads. The word ‘eva’ is used for emphasis. (Sadeva – sat iti astitvamaatram vastu nirvisesham sarvvagatam, ekam, niranjanam, niravayavam, vijnaaanam yat aagamyate sarvavedantebhyah. Ekasabdah avataaranaarthah.) Before creation, it was not possible to grasp it as possessed of name and form. ….By the words, ‘One only’, is meant that there was nothing else coming under the category of its product. ’Without a second’ means that It (Existence) has no second thing different from Itself”
