short record synopsis i wrote on youtube about poisons look what the cat dragged in (1986) in which i take the unorthodox view that the record is, in fact, punk, rather than hair metal / hard fm.. obviously the album is the latter of those things on the surface and according to the consenus, but im going for a reinterpretation.. as i consider it more, im thinking its important to draw a distinction between punk and punk rock.. my point then, is that even though the music is not technically punk rock, the record and the bands iconography (during this early period of their career) does, in my estimate, fall under the punk rubric.. capeesh? {the album is} punk in the sense of its character; the albums spirit is offensive in a way thats not obnoxious, but charming--which is the most unique and difficult type of offensiveness to achieve..there is also a punk-ish feeling of youth that it conveys--it has a very distinct first record nuance of a band just beginning to hit its stride, and i believe i read the album was essentially recorded as a low-budget demo; this comes across in places.. if you concentrate on 70s punk, you could theoretically look at what became known as hair metal or hard fm, as you call it, as an expansion or evolution of that sound.. when punk, per se, had its renaissance in the 90s with bands like rancid, et. al., this zeitgeist was essentially paying homage to early punk, rather than synthesizing that music form into something new... many of the songs here actually sound fresher and more timeless than the over-processed, clipped culture of the contemporary --i wont forget you reminds me of something from the 50s, a teenage lovers lane, cruising classic.. blame it on you, want some, need some, #1 bad boy and the title track manage to be sonically abrasive while also evoking personality and quirkiness.. the songwriting is solid, just as in forget theres a certain throwback feel that is reminiscent of early rock and roll..i want action, cry tough and talk dirty were hit singles not by accident.. i suppose the imagery and style of poison (their andogyny--clothes, make-up, etc.) is also punk in that its extremely against the grain as to what men were/are supposed to be.. granted, many bands were glam, but poison dialed it up to 11 on this front, it took chutzpah for them to pull this off...anyway, i just dig this poison record, think its underappreciated... https://youtube/watch?v=cMVsQKFpD2k
