sir file still pending Use Maithili on Indian currency, RBI urged PATNA: A large number of Maithili speaking people have requested RBI governor Raghuram Rajan to use Maithili as well as Manipuri, Santhali, Dogri and Bodo on Indian currency. Such a step will not only help in national integration, it will also inculcate a great sense of pride and belongingness in various corners of our great country, Subhash Choudhary, a Maithili activist from Dhanbad (Jharkhand), wrote to the RBI governor. Out of the 22 languages accorded official language status in the eighth schedule of the Constitution, only 17 find a place on the Indian currency. The RBI had earlier provided printing of all the official languages on the currency. However, it appears that the four new languages (Maithili, Santhali, Dogri and Bodo) included in the eighth schedule on January 8, 2004, missed the RBI attention, Choudhary said. Talking to TOI over phone, he said, The Indian currency notes are the symbols of our sovereignty and pride. It goes without saying that all the languages which find a mention as official language in our Constitution should be treated with equal respect and be given similar treatment. Maithili has its own script known as Tirhutta or Kaithi. Noted literary personality Usha Kiran Khan also favours Choudharys move. The method and mechanism of such an effort may not be considered difficult as a small change in font and size will create enough space for these languages as well as many more on the currency, Choudhary wrote in his letter. PP Deshpande, assistant manager, RBI department of currency management, Mumbai, in a reply to Choudhary said, Since the matter falls within the purview of department of economic affairs, ministry of finance, we have forwarded this request to them for consideration. Over half a dozen Maithili scholars and activists, including Pankaj K Mishra of Delhi University, Dev N Pathak (South Asian University, New Delhi), Amit Anand, a social activist of Saharsa, have also sent a separate letter to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley requesting him to include Maithili on the rupee
