sitting at the airport, outside on the sidewalk waiting for Eric Ware to get here from down south, and this guy next to me is doing some sidewalk preachy rant to, or with, the people around him ( i think theyre some kind of evangelical church group, they keep waving their hands in the air and halleluiaing). ANYway he asked me if I was saved, as maybe i shot him more than one skeptical glance. I told him that I didnt know about saved, but that I thought I was remarkably well-preserved. He scowled at me and said Jesus has no truck with the sarcastic and irreverent, young lady, and youll be needing Jesus. (that was such a perfect cue...i mean...how could I pass this one up? ) I told him I didnt need Jesus himself at the moment, but if I could use Jesuss truck, that would really help me out. He then yelled at the sky lord she is not conscious of your judgement, then looked at me and said you will find the judgement of the lord to be swift and righteous, for making light of the lords word (which I didnt, just this weird dudes words) is a sin and i am sure , from the looks of you, you are a veritle sinner (veritle? I dont know if he meant veritable or terrible.) this is where being a voracious yet largely indiscriminate reader comes in handy, as Ive read his favorite book a couple times- I suggested he take the advice of his protagonist, and start casting stones when he himself was without sin, and that sometimes loving thy neighbor as thyself includes shutting up and leaving thy neighbor alone. you know what? he did. That was satisfying. his little clutch of christians (gaggle of christians? preach of christians? cauldron? whats the collective for xians?) shot me a few dirty looks, but by then I had finished my smoke and headed inside.
