small far north Queensland council that has spent more than $100,000 on the impoundment of three dangerous dogs is seeking legislative change to prevent others incurring similar costs. Douglas Shire Council, north of Cairns, impounded three American pit bulls in late 2013 after a vicious attack on an elderly man that left him in hospital. Destruction orders were issued for two of the animals, which the owner successfully had overturned on appeal, but an attempt to have dangerous-dog declarations for all three animals also overturned has remained ongoing in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The dogs have remained detained in the council pound for the duration of that time, racking up a bill of more than $100,000 in feeding costs, vet bills and staffing, according to Mayor Julia Leu. $100,000 is equivalent to new staff members. We are a new council with lots and lots of things to do and every cent is spent on the sort of things we should be doing, not having to pick up the tab for people who are snubbing their noses at the system, she said.
