so Ive been questioning myself a lot about cultural appropriation because I come from a country where it is not only part of our culture but it is embedded in our modern art under the anthropophagic movement (aprja.net/?p=833). To keep things simple, I had never thought of it as an evil thing. Just like my ancestors saw eating warriors killed in combat as honoring their lives. But I dont look Brazilian. I dont sound Brazilian. I am socially awkward in ways most Brazilians are not. I look like the cultural stew I am (part Russian and Hungarian Jews on my fathers American side and part Italian and the usual native Brazilian - Portuguese mess on my Brazilian mothers side) and the otaku I have always been. So my question is... If I end up doing a real Brazilian act somewhere down the road (with dances like Coco or Jongo), because I dont look the part and I may be feeding off a different part of country than the one I was raised in... is it still cultural appropriation? I guess it would be a bit akin to a East Coast resident doing a cowgirl act, but still... i.e., growing up they would have us do German traditional dances at school because that IS the cultural heritage in Santa Catarina. Im confused. (btw, this is the original song I used for my raccoon act)
