so after crunching some numbers (thanks to Ben Marks for descriptive tournament results), I used maths to find some stuffs. -using ssbm singles as an example (this can relate to all games, even outside of the smash realm). Tournaments are awesome. I think they are hype, and they provide extra draw and incentive for people to journey to the location. that said, as a community of gamers is being built, there is rift that happens between the haves and have nots. there is a gap in fighting games even as worthwhile competitors attempt to bride it. these competitors can (possibly) be disheartened by the thought of assured defeat as they compete for a top 3 prize pool placing. (inb4 we arent playing for cash. I just established the reasoning of why cash successfully brought the community together to an event, soo... L2 logic). my solution is rather blunt. maths. change the prize pool percentages. rather than including a top 3, extend it to top 8. 1. 50% 2. 20% 3. 10% 4. 6% 5. 4% 6. 4% 7. 3% 8. 3% - by using this system it drastically changes the mentality of the competition. competing for 8th place to get your 5 buy-in back, is much more feasible, and rewards a larger crowd basis, inspiring travelers to come back for further reward and validation. using ssbm singles numbers as an example, there are 25 entrants, with different levels of technical ability. by eliminating outliers (freaks of nature like chip, arti, jamntoast, tired of listing people better than me), then we allow the other gamers in the community to come to events and still fight for a piece of the pie. using maths if we extended the tourney size to 35 entrants (10 more people), and using the top 8 prize pool sharing, the top 3 contestants still make more money in this tourney, as compared the the 25 man tournament. sorry for wall of text. TL DR extend prize pools, which would attract larger tournament numbers, ultimately balancing the maths and giving back more to more members of the community.
