so an interesting point of discussion Ive had with both musicians and non is the idea of sheet music. One argument against having sheet music is that music itself is an aural art form and also an emotional art as well. You simply cant PUT that into a paper format. Take pop songs for example that you find on MusicNotes.... theyre not that great, as a matter of fact, a lot of them are TERRIBLE. Even classical music, emotional CONTENT simply cant be conveyed on paper format, no matter how much direction is given. However, the argument for sheet music, at least to me, is: its a road map that gives you possibilities of what CAN be done, however, its not gospel truth. In this sense, for classical music Urtext editions seem to give the most freedom. Even take an art form like jazz was for the longest time, exclusively an aural art form: you learn from the records. Errol Garner was quoted to have said: people cant HEAR you read. I side with both parts of this argument: ear AND reading are important. (Im not even talking about reading WELL either, just reading in general)
