so many people have children in a (biologically speaking) fairly uneventful way that its really easy to forget the incredibly difficult paths some of us travel around that subject. I am not infertile, but ive had my own hard times. every time a stranger asks me is this your first? i want to punch them in the face, because no, it is not and i dont want to deny my sons, BUT i dont always feel like pouring out the story of the most difficult thing that has ever happened to me to everyone i ever come across. whether its a history of loss, difficulty trying to conceive in the first place, or another rough road, if you dont know someones personal reproductive history, be easy. you dont know their history or their triggers. i dont even ask people about their children unless they bring them up. MOST IMPORTANTLY, if someone does let you in on their story THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK. dont say you know if you dont. dont give some cosmic everything happens for a reason shit (if that helps you sleep at night, i respect that, but it might also get you punched int he throat if you say it to the wrong person). think of an appropriate, non intrusive, supportive response and move along. they will indicate whether or not they wish to further discuss the topic.
