songwritershalloffame.org/exhibits/C71 Butron Lane is one of those composers who always interests me because hes an example of A+ talent without an A-level career. As a composer he was absolutely top-tier talent, both in film and show music - but he rarely worked on first-rate films and rarely seemed to be first choice for a show. (He only got ON A CLEAR DAY, the second of the two scores for which hes best remembered, because Richard Rodgers quit - and Lane, who hadnt done a show in 18 years, produced a score that made no one miss Rodgers at all.) He quit a number of shows because he didnt think they were working, like ARMS AND THE GIRL, and in films he probably suffered from not having a permanent lyric writing partner. (Hed write a hit with one lyricist, a hit with another; he worked with everybody at some point.) But his musical style never became dated and his inspiration never dried up; he just didnt work that much. A strangely shaped career.
