soundstage/revequip/vandersteen_3a_signature.htm. My oh my, my speakers are old fashioned, and old. But good. I think of all the things you tend to keep in the audiophile world once youve hit the sweet spot, its more often the speakers. Partially because they are the only item in the chain that has to deal with the real acoustics of your listening room. And sometimes it takes a long time to figure those acoustics out. It took me two years to get these just right. And once I did that, I discovered I could change amps and preamps as I saw fit, within reason. Out went my hunky chunky and relatively expensive McIntosh amp, replaced with a used $600 amp made by Quad Acoustics. No discernible difference to me. (And Im pretty danged discerning!! If I do say so myself Or, maybe it just took so dang long to find something I could live with, once it happened I just said Whew!! Thats enough!.) I think the folks at Linn would disagree with the idea that the speaker is the most important piece. They say, or at least used to say that the most important thing is the source. And actually, I agree. Im not saying its the most important piece at all. Im just saying that the character of the sound cannot help but me much more affected by the rooms specific acoustics, and the speaker is the only part that has to deal with that. And whether you set out to do it or not the speakers tend to end up being the thing you build the system around. Then you mix it all up in a pot..... and it comes out.........HERE!! HEAR?
