spent the morning at the Palm Beach Co Mental Health and Drug Abuse Summit yesterday - a gathering of law enforcement, community outreach, state representatives, media, school board, Neuroscientists, doctors and lay advocacy groups trying to raise awareness and find collaborate ways to address this ever growing problem that my Inner Inmate calls the Compassionly ill taking care of the mentally ill in a ill defined system or simply, One Flew INTO the Cuckoos Nest. Still some doable suggestions: *revision of the Baker and Marchand Acts *more direct collaborations between acute care-crisis centers and community outreach, after care programs (e.g., St Marys Hosp ER and The Lords Place) *raising awareness thru N.A.M.I. and 211 hotline. Disappointedly, very little on the advances in neuroscience, and no mention of mindfulness...perhaps an opportunity?
