spent this evening in San Antonio at a gathering to honor Col. Darrell Welch~one of the very few remaining WWII flying aces. Cousin Darrells passing marks the end of an era in our nations history, and in the Welch family history. He was present for nearly every reunion over the last 66 years, and his goodness and guidance kept the extended family together. Being in that room with his beloveds showed what a legacy of wisdom, courage, hope, and love he created. But the greatest of those was love. Darrell was a good daddy to his children~a father worth missing. Not everyone has that, and his kids and grandkids cherish him and his memory. He believed in them, and he educated them, including sending one of his grandsons through Yale law school. Darrell made you feel that to be a Welch was quite something; that you could and should do something with the life youd been given~make the world better, work hard, volunteer, and care about others. But he wasnt preachy. He made you feel it because he lived it. I will miss Darrell and, unfortunately (because of teaching obligations), I will miss his military service, with full honors, tomorrow. Godspeed, Cousin Darrell. Thank you for the example of what near-perfection looks like.
