…still working with Southern American writers. Today’s selections, especially Sherwood Anderson’s “Hands”, tend to cause a bit of controversy. The ambiguity in that particular text causes a wide range of reactions. Just look at the communities that banned his work. To diminish some of the anxiety, I have the students look for hands in other texts that convey different messages. They search for hands that show reflection, comfort, wisdom, creativity, joy, and enthusiasm. Why do this? I have to show the students that they are ready to understand Thomas Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
