stories etc # 102 rivals soooo I went to queen of peace catholic grade school...we competed against other catholic grade schools in sports (and by competed I mean we pretty much put on our lousy uniforms, showed up and got beat).... we played flag football instead of tackle cause we didnt have many boys to make up a team and surely didnt have enough school funds to pay for helmets and stuff... I played flag football, baseball, basketball against a kid from the other side of town and his team every time (for 2 years in a row..and he was good)....then I went to mt carmel catholic high school and that damn kid went to a rival high school (st pius across town)...his teams pretty much beat us every year and I played football, baseball and ran track (basketball for one year)...oh, I did say this was a small high school....and his teams beat us pretty much every year for four years in a row (and he was good).... I graduated from high school and went to texas a&m....and guess who showed up freshman year in one of my classes?...that guy...I walked in to sit down...only seat available not on the front row was just behind him...I stared him down and he stared me down as I walked down that aisle....then we did that steely eyed head nod that macho teen boys do...hated that bastard and he hated me... turns out we eventually realized that what we disliked each other was that we both played sports and if we had gone to the same school we woulda played together and gotten along....ended up being better than pretty good friends....lots of laughs, a few beers and even enjoyed his wedding (it turns out his family did the ooom pah pah band weddings too)....saw yesterday he dropped on the football field at halftime...hope kubiak is back on his feet soon...good guy that gary----
