: substitute diaries ~ what i did wrong as a substitute teacher for 8 days at my last assignment at the school at the edge of lake erie, toledo, ohio: i sat the classroom desks in an oval so students could see each other when they talked. i had students participate in classroom discussions without raising their hands. i allowed ten 6th grade students go to the cafeteria/auditorium/gym for lunch without accompanying them. i sat three students in the hall so one of them could get help from the other two students in mathematics. i allowed the 6th grade students to make magic putty out of borax, elmers glue and water on their own time. i showed ps 22 fifth grade students singing on youtube (see below, there this time) to the students. i watched instead of responded to a colleague when that colleague told me i must accompany ten 12-year old and older 6th grade students to lunch. i got on facebook on my lunch. seems as though an image is forming of substitute teachers for hired teachers as indentured servants to do exactly what the absent teacher does in the classroom because the students must have consistency or the students will get confused, disorientated, discombobulated. i failed to fit into the culture of the school. i attempted to discuss some of my actions with administration instead i realized the process of discussion is giving me a list of my wrongs and showing me notes that i had made to myself that the regular teacher had collected when he came in thursday to collect student work to grade. for folks who are with toledo public schools who may read this particular diary entry the curriculum you didnt follow from the absent teacher is in photographs below. thank you to the following student folks who made my journey a joy and a wonderful challenge at the school at the edge of lake erie, toledo, ohio: devon, wesley, ryan, drew, precious, selena, cassius, deven, jayden, erin, angelina, hannah, dominic, dylan, reche, chad, rachel, chandalyn, hillary, phoenix, lauren, kyleigh, aaron, zak, cadence, sarah and alyssa. all good folks who became my best teachers for the eight days i spent with them. hospitality appreciated. take care, ms. cheryle.
