t is a little hard to remember that it is January in Colorado! Highs have soared to the low 70s this afternoon in Denver, with mild 40s to low 50s in the mountains. The average high this time of year is in the mid 40s, the record of for today is 76 - set way back in 1888. The mild weather here is in stark contrast to the big winter storm in the Northeast! Parts of New England are still getting hammered with heavy snow and strong winds. This Noreaster storm has snarled travel across much of the eastern United States as airlines have been reluctant to send their aircraft into the northeast quarter of the nation. The see-saw weather pattern across the nation is being caused by a strong northwest to southeast jet stream flow that is pouring cold air into the central and eastern parts of the country. Colorado is on the mild and dry southern edge of this fast flow aloft and folks in the southwestern quarter of the nation are enjoying the best weather in the United States! Starting on Wednesday, the jet stream pattern will become a little more west to east in direction over the lower 48 states. This will help ease the eastern storm out into the Atlantic and will slowly allow cooler air to return to Colorado from the Pacific Coast. The westerly wind will kick-up to 20-30 mph and we will see the clouds begin to increase along with a drop in temperatures. Not dramatic, but down about 10 to 15 degrees. Thursday and Friday will continue to cool with a chance for rain and snow statewide as a weak storm system moves in from the West Coast. The brunt of this next storm will likely impact the southern half of California, southern Nevada and Arizona on Thursday and spread clouds into Colorado. There will be some rain and snow associated with this next storm for southern Colorado and the mountains, with a slight chance for snow in Denver by Friday night and Saturday. It will be a slow moving system, so expect more clouds and cooler conditions through much of the weekend. This next storm will not bring heavy snow to Denver or the northern mountains, but central and southwestern Colorado could get a nice fresh snowfall in time for weekend skiing. This storm will also mean a rainy, cool Super Bowl weekend for folks in Phoenix.
