technically, yes, it was a coup. Morsi was elected in a contest that was, for the most part, free and fair. However, the sweeping changes he made, the attempts to consolidate and maintain absolute power, the disproportionate amount of Brotherhood influence, and a slew of other actions that were marginalizing minorities and stomping all over basic human rights, were all committed in less than one year. Who knows how bad it would have gotten if he had been allowed to stay in power and continue these policies. I am appalled at the more than 1000 civilian deaths, and I absolutely abhor any violence against peaceful demonstrators, but Morsi was not about to change any of his policies, nor negotiate with the opposition, so the only stable institution in the country stood up for the people. The voting part worked, they just need help with their "checks and balances" system.....
