thanks Jeff Harris On this day in music history: January 3, 1976 - Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written and produced by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, it is the biggest US hit for the pop band from Edinburgh, Scotland. Written by the team of Scotsman Martin and Irishman Coulter who will pen several of the Bay City Rollers hits, after being paired with the band by their UK record label Bell Records. An early version of the song will be recorded in 1973 with the bands original lead singer Gordon Nobby Clark which will fail to attract any attention. They will re-record it will new lead vocalist Les McKeown in 1974 but is not released as a single in their home country. When Clive Davis takes over as head Bell Records in 1974, the Rollers will be among the handful of artists he keeps on the label roster. After changing the companys name to Arista in 1975, Davis will select Saturday Night for release as a single in late 1975. Entering the Hot 100 at #85 on October 11, 1975, it will climb to the top of the chart twelve weeks later. The will also top the Canadian singles chart in early 1976.
