thansk Jeff Harris On this day in music history: January 3, 1983 - The single Der Kommissar by After The Fire is released. Written by Robert Ponger, Johann Falco Holzel, and Andy Piercy, it is the biggest hit for the London based pop/rock band. Originally recorded by Austrian pop singer Falco in 1982, the song is originally half sung and half rapped in German with the title translating to English as the commissioner (or police captain). Falcos version will be a hit across Europe and will even become a sizeable hit on the US dance chart, peaking at #10 on the Billboard Club Play chart in mid 1982. British band After The Fire will record a cover version of the song soon after, with lead singer Andy Piercy re-writing the lyrics in English. Only a minor hit in their home country (peaking at #47 on the UK singles chart), ATF will actually disband in December of 1982, prior to its US release. Der Kommissar will become a huge hit when MTV places the video into heavy rotation, which will then translate into major airplay on US top 40 radio. Entering the Hot 100 at #75 on February 12, 1983, Der Kommissar will peak at #5 eleven weeks later on April 30, 1983. In time, the song will become regarded as a quintessential 80s pop classic, being featured in numerous films such as The Wedding Singer, Pineapple Express and television shows such as Family Guy and Everybody Hates Chris.
