the 10 year rule The ability to persist in the face of obstacles - TopicsExpress

the 10 year rule The ability to persist in the face of obstacles is at least as important as talent. It takes at least a decade of hard work and practice to achieve success. Effort and chance count as much as innate talent(paraphrasing) "That because of the myriad of foreseeable and chance obstacles that must be overcome to complete a task of any complexity, the connection between ability and accomplishment is far less direct than anything that can possibly be explained..." ~ Leonard Mlodinow-The Drunkards Walk(a great book IMHO) I would argue that it is more often the case that effort and chance allow ones innate talent to surface talent is always relevant but it is often hidden in and around messages received external messages that define self messaging self messaging that invariably define each of us talent lies in and around, if not directly behind our natural inclinations in, around and behind messages internalized you are good at "this" you are not at good at "that" good enough for recognition but not good enough for success we bide our time relishing the oft repeated message that you are special fearful of its pursuit a pursuit that will invariably be accompanied by the question what makes you so special? the idea that being "special" should be immediately and universally recognized is the centrifuge that separates us from our talent talent that needs to be nurtured and fed to be realized (I know...TLDR)
