the final 4H column from Amy T. Hunt County 4-H will be going through some changes this summer, changes that will help it grow and become stronger. I will be leaving my position at the Extension office as 4-H & Youth Development Program Assistant in July. This was not a decision I made lightly, but one that I knew was the best decision for me, my family, and the 4-H program. During the past several years as program assistant, I have learned a lot and I would like to share some of the things that I have learned: 1. Respond to people in a timely manner. Good customer service is important and goes a long way. 2. Hold everyone responsible to the same standards, treat everyone equal, and do not play favorites. 3. Try new things while remaining faithful to the familiar. This keeps people interested and comfortable. 4. Laugh a lot, especially at yourself and with your co-workers. 5. Ask. Ask for help, ask for funding, ask for donations, and ask for time. The worst that can happen is people can say “No”. 6. Be prepared in case you get a bunch of “No’s”. Always have a back-up plan. 7. Master Gardener’s grow the best vegetables and are willing to share if you are around when they stop by with their bounty. 8. Be organized. 9. Spread information freely. Although I will be sad to leave, I know that the next chapter of my life will be very rewarding. My first grandbaby will be born this fall, I will be volunteering more in my church, and I will be learning new things. The Hunt County 4-H & Youth Development Program will be in good hands. I have met so many wonderful people during my time at the Extension office. I owe a great deal of thanks to all the volunteers, 4-H leaders, community organizations, and businesses that supported me and the program. I am happy for the friendships I have made and the people I have met. I want to give a big “Thank You” to Mary Sue Cole, Sara Allen, and Sylvia Gay. These three ladies are the best! They challenged me, encouraged me, and made me laugh. I will really miss them! If you have any questions about 4-H you can call 903-455-9885 or send an email to [email protected]
