the first time i ever heard sphere of annihilation: A saturday afternoon, in 1988, at pease park in austin, tx. Sir Nithanalorn was the gentleman who moved from el paso, and founded the park. When barad-duin started, he was a level 5 wizard. Therefore, he stopped playing wizard, until the park grew up enough to support a level 5. We had pretty big battle games, quite often up to 40 people, 20 per side. The highest level person was someone like rufus, who had never played anything but barbarian and was 4th level. I didnt know anything about being such a high level wizard. The only people in the entire amtgard world who were 5th level or higher were in el paso. I remember being at the first barad-duin coronation and boggling at someone talking about having over 50 credits in 3 different classes!!! It was simply mind boggling to realize that somebody could have so many credits in anything, let alone 3 classes. So here we were, an entire park with nobody over 4th level, 500 miles away from the only source for the rules we played. We had never seen anybody play these levels, and had no idea what it was like. So we advanced towards each other across the huge field at peace park. In the middle of the field, nithanalorn paused, and took out a black spell ball. Id only heard of it. I mean i knew what it was, it was called a sphere of annihilation. Id never seen it cast, because it was a high level spell. Later the size of them got so silly that wed jokingly refer to the sofa of annihilation. He shouted at the top of his lungs, SPHERE OF ANNIHILATION!! SPHERE OF ANNIHILATION!!.... The entire field stopped. Many gasped, including myself. Everything paused for several seconds until he finished his incantation brandishing his spell ball, and continued walking forward. It was a moment frozen in time. In my head, its always there. A bit dimmer after all these years, but in that memory, were all in our 20s, and were all amazed at this oh so powerful spell. Im not sure if the same thing happened in emerald hills, but i do know this was the first time sphere of annihilation was spoken in austin, perhaps the first time it was cast anywhere outside of el paso. To me, its a memory of an amazing thing, that i will never know again.
