the government was also concerned about Kiwis trying to obtain - TopicsExpress

the government was also concerned about Kiwis trying to obtain citizenship ‘through the back door’ by joining the ADF. This shows just how ridiculous the Governments position is. We hear regularly from the parents of young people who wish to serve in the Australian Defence Force but are prevented from doing so because they are denied citizenship due to the 2001 changes. These young people are proud to call Australia home and are eager to serve this country, even at great risks to themselves. In them, we see this countrys future - people whose home is Australia, whose allegiance is to Australia, and who desire nothing more than to serve Australia. The Australian Government, however, sees them only as a group of non-citizens seeking to find a backdoor path to citizenship. To characterise these young people in this way is simply offensive. To suggest that young people raised in Australia would commit themselves to a future in the Defence Force solely to gain an Australian passport is ludicrous. Unfortunately, the Governments position on this matter is only too typical of its positions on a variety of issues affecting Kiwis. Far too often it obsesses about the potential for backdoor migrants, immigration loopholes, and welfare shopping without giving any consideration to the likelihood of any of these problems actually arising or the real world consequences of its policies and how they affect people who are for all intents and purposes Australians.
