the group will come as no surprise but for those who know me halfway well, the era of the concert will. Genesis and part two of Suppers Ready from 1976. (Part 2 because the whole thing is more than 23 minutes long and Id maybe get thrown out.) Suppers Ready was for many people the ultimate prog rock anthem, on a par maybe with Echoes by Floyd. Watching Peter Gabriel sing this live was the eighth wonder of the world for me. When Gabriel quit Genesis in 1975, I cried. The world was at an end. For almost a year it was touch and go for the fans whether there would be a Genesis anymore: Any replacement singing Gabriel era material was unimaginable and no-one believed that Phil Collins was the man for the job. The first album, Trick of the Tail was unbelievably good, at times it seemed Gabriel was still singing. But live? I had tickets for the second gig at Hammersmith and refused to speak to anyone who had been the day before. No spoilers! Result? Two and a half hours of every hair on my arms and legs standing on end. None of the Gabriel tracks was sung in the style of before, Collins made every single song his own. In this one he was absolutely on fire and his facial expressions were demonic. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand from the word go. If youve never seen Phil Collins from 76 or 77, look at this from 5 minutes on, hes unrecognizable. History has shown that the pop era in Genesis came after Steve Hackett left, so I got two bonus years of having my heroes the way I wanted them.
