the hbo show vice that aired last friday had a segment that focused on greenland and climate change. greenland is losing about 140 billion tons of ice per yr. over 27 ft. in some areas. antarctica is also having a large net loss of ice but so far not as fast as greenlands. climate change has drastically exceeded previously drawn worst case scenarios. dr. gavin schmidt, a nasa climatologist expects ice melt to accelerate. he says that climate change is entirely man made and that there is no credible way to blame anything else since studies have considered those possibilities and ruled them out. he went on to say that we need an 80% decrease in emissions within a few decades or we could see at least a 4 ft. rise in the oceans by the end of the century. our emissions are currently increasing. if climate change continues to beat predictions we could see a need to move or protect some large cities (eg. new york) with barriers. even if/when global temps are stabilized he expects sea level rise to continue for centuries perhaps thousands of yrs.
