the inherent contradiction and inevitable failure in attempting to hear the voice of God is that it sets an expectation. just as in meditation, if you set an expectation and seek to attain it you have already defeated yourself and entrapped yourself. surely God does not abide in the effort zone but in joy. So the only way to tune in to God is to feel the joy within. Of course, this is only a very tiny piece, experienceable at this level of awareness of what is the joy of God which is so far beyond our capability to understand. but therein lies the beauty of the practice – it has unlimited capability to get better and better, expand more and more and be felt more and more deeply and joyfully. this all being said, when I “had to” hear the voice of God in order to feel peace, it was there. It was the still small voice for God and it is serene and certain beyond any possibility of doubt. This happened once. How I hear God is in three ways at this current time. 1. is more like dictation. I open my mouth and allow the words to come out. This, then, becomes more of a channeling than a listening. But I know when it is coming from God because of a feeling that is coming from elsewhere than other thoughts often come from and because there is no judgement in that zone, only peaceful and grateful thoughts come through. Thankfulness or gratefulness is the greatest prayer there is. 2. my music, more precisely, my lyrics. the music only frames the lyrics in this world in a communications medium which opens hearts and minds and puts the body to good use in service of the divine. 3. numbers – 555, 48, 444, 222, 911 and others appear in my framework of perception on an almost daily basis and are a portal of sorts which usually just acknowledge that I am on the right path.
