the key term in talking about Indigenous Sovereignty is inherent - TopicsExpress

the key term in talking about Indigenous Sovereignty is inherent as in, we have always had it from the times of our beginning. it is the character, life guiding principles, our culture, language, etc. that we were blessed with originally. those gifts were not intended to carry us, just up to the time of the Great Intrusion, they were meant to take care of us in perpetuity. our gifts are intact, for the most part, thus we possess the means and the reason to set our own path, colonial governments or not. the special relationship we have with the US federal government is one that is predicated on their terms. we have the ability and the authorization to critique and amend that relationship on our terms, unfortunately, only as far as practical. but in order to get to that point we need leadership that understands and celebrates these dynamics and that have the courage to take the risks.
