the play is now in full spin of production. as i get busier , leo and vito retreat to the back porch. leos ball club is out of town but adding more young people to the roster. vitos taking a break from the studio. heat and humidity. my gallery work and theaterical demands are given a break with visits from folks visiting from away. it seems each day is a new person stopping by. last nights friend was from florida with many a story to tell. she had a previous life here in chicago. her family tales were woven in with a certain period of the neighborhoods development. like so many things the inner connections are deeper and richer with the story of the folks behind them. i find myself in the future never looking the same at these places again ,now knowing their history. we also had a visitor to the gallery to write about lous exhibition. her first time to the gallery. i hope it opened a new book of experiences for her in the future. she was entranced by his work. it seems firecat projects has a new friend. the theater work is in the strange phase. im remembering aspects of the process that i had found distasteful in the past. a strange sense of giving folks wide areas of room to express their crafts which is fine. this is match by those seemingly acting like tour guides in permitting and encouraging these actions. it is all in the name of art and performance. there is a nominal nod to the idea of social inequalities but all is overlooked in the name of promoting ones career and furthering ones potential standing in the theater world. these are all independent contractors and are in the game for something bigger. the real truth of the meaning of their words is passed by for a greater dramatic effect.i forget about these things until i re-enter this arena. then when i come home, i feel slightly dirty from the insincerity of the experience. vito reminds me its only about putting asses in the damn seats. if they can remember a half line from some tune or give a few seconds of a thoughtful pause to reconsidering their approach to life, big f.. deal. the important thing is they paid to be there. if it gets a good review and everyones career benefits that will make those folks happy. nothing else will change. its a f.,, business. leo looks up from his beer and says, just keep smiling, nod when you are supposed to, and be pleasant. thats your role , i think. i decide to take ella for a late night walk. they are both right. dont over think it. just smile. realize youre just a prop with some clothes on. know your place and just accept it.
