the significance of the alternative spiritual practices we - TopicsExpress

the significance of the alternative spiritual practices we associate with our postmodern movement is simple: since their genesis in the 1960s it has been about embracing your body. discovering an experiential spirituality that is about turning inward, working with your own mind and heart, discovering a sense of sacredness in-and-as your primal, emotional, sensual, fierce, alive human body. in many ways this was not the original emphasis of some of the practices and beliefs we have adopted and repurposed from other times and places —but this is the GREAT GIFT of contemporary East/West spirituality to the world: an integrated embrace of the body, a psychologically informed acknowledgment of the heart, a BIG YES to our capacity to heal and grow and be fully human, and a healthy dose of skepticism toward authoritarian modes of disempowering control and shame-based ideology. every time we replace shame with self-love, transform resentment into forgiveness, turn suffering into wisdom and insight, trauma into resilience, and cultivate a deep immersion in the pulsating, fluid, radiant body intelligence, every moment on the meditation cushion, therapy couch, yoga mat, massage table, ecstatic dance floor, that we find grace, gratitude and a sense of being at home in ourselves as-we-are offers an entirely new and liberated spiritual vision to humanity.
