the ten best mystery storys are first of all The Brothers Karamazov but the close runner up is Walden, possibly interchangeable, the latter you first have to be enough of a detective to detect that there is a mystery to solve, and honorable mention goes to The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey where the mystery is 100s of years dead and the detective is bedridden, #4 is The Speckled Band by Sherlock Doyle and #5 is The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler although it might be #6 The Maltese Falcon by Dash Hammett may actually be #5. #7 The poetry of Emily written as characters in the fantasy she was creating with her sister Anne. They were destroyed by her sister Charlotte who built a fantasy with her brother of another land, Angria. The poetry informs us of what it felt like to live in the land of Gondol. Charlotte almost certainly destroyed the history of Gondol but even she could not destroy the poetry. Fortunately. She almost certainly would have also destroyed the manuscript for Wuthering Heights. Good thing Emily had already published it. So The Gondol Poetry is a tantalizing mystery #7. It reminds me of the letter when Henry David Thoreau wrote to his sister how he had destroyed his poetry because Ralph Waldo Emerson said it was not good. such misplaced trust... a bad poem by Henry is better than a good poem by anyone, say Frost for example... because of the person, and if Waldo was right you might think to yourself, this is not good, good thing he could write ... oh shoot what number am i on? #8 is A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson and #9 is All The Presidents Men where two investigative reporters manage to combine gonzo with breaking news. #10 is my own personal favorite mystery story The Talisman Ring by Georgette Heyer.
