thehindu/.../mlas-greens-to-fight-for-river/article4879601.ece MLAs, greens to fight for river ! A meeting of 21 MLAs representing the Assembly constituencies on the banks of Bharathapuzha, in the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, and Thrissur, will meet the leaders of the Bharathapuzha Samraskhana Samithy and other environmental organisations at Pattambi Tourist Bungalow on July 5 at 10 a.m. to chalk out programmes to save the river from destruction. The Samithy will be represented by its chairman V.C. Kabeer, former Minister; P.K. Warrier, president; Indanur Gopi, secretary; and Biju Kumar, a hydrologist who had done studies on the river. Bharathapuzha, which dried up in every summer, was the lifeline of three districts as it provided drinking and irrigation water to over 50 lakh people, said Mr. Gopi. It also provided drinking water to Guruvayur and Kunnamkulam municipalities. He said the river was facing wanton destruction owing to unscientific sand-mining, encroachment of the river bed, and pollution. The inter-State Parambikulam-Aliyar-Agreement (PAP) between Kerala and Tamil Nadu that diverted its water to the neighbouring State also affected the flow of the river, especially during summers.
