there was once a community which included 2 religious orders.one was very wealthy,and was spread across the best land with command of resources and help to work the land and the enterprises whilst the brothers were mostly at silent prayer or study.the building was beautiful,sturdy and included features like the most modern central heating and double glazing.not only did it have a well tutored choir but at Christmas which was soon coming,it hired an expensive opera singer to be cantor. down the road-a long road,and in an obscure,poor and run down district,was an equally run down tenement,more like a shed really.everything creaked and leaked.and the best they could do was light one small fire in one room.the brothers and sisters were ragged,in habits that were more parts than the whole.as the bell rang for their gathering brothers and sisters scuttled in from the cold and rain along with often some of the more disreputable members of the community.huddled together to keep warm,someone brewed tea and they began to sing together,cracked and squeaky voices and all to keep their spirits up. back up the road.despite the opera singer and despite the practised choir whose members were chosen for their voices,no-one was drawn in from outside.the labourers continued at their work and there was silence,partly the consequence of thick walls,carpets,curtains sound proofing and double glazing. back down at the shed the place was rocking,lifted by voices as people on the street stopped to watch or listen and to join in as a kind of rhythm section.and if there is a god,s/he would hear not the silence of majesty but the exuberant joy of simplicity,community and yes-the poverty as a pure long note-perhaps,probably the music of the spheres. https://youtube/watch?v=KSZSLnaNXeM
