Dear Dr. Tanner, My name is …., Im a PhD student….and, by day, Im an assistant principal at a small rural high school... Ive worked with teens for 15 years as a teacher and administrator and Ive seen too many lose heart in school, doubt their abilities, or give up due to factors that Ive determined I have little control over as a school employee. I have gone back to school to work on improving life for...students who succeeded both academically and socially in high school but who drop out in their first year of college. I have been reading much of what youve written in preparation for my further research and writing. I am especially interested in your theory of recentering, which I believe provides a framework for considering many of the difficulties experienced by the population I intend to work with. In fact, tomorrow I will be role-playing you at a mock panel. (Im hoping you dont find this too creepy--its going to be a valuable exercise!) ...Even if you are not willing or able to work with me, I wanted you to know that I find your work inspiring and intriguing. It helps me think of my students in a new light and puts some of my own observations into a theoretical context. Thank you for considering my requests. Best of luck this semester!
