thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/focus/article1314055.ece A rebel executioner has described how he dispatched two Syrian army soldiers after being promised that the killings would secure his place in paradise. It was as a courier that Mirkan first helped the rebels at a friend’s request. He said he had delivered cash from Qatari and Lebanese supporters, receiving $2,000 for each delivery. After meeting the emir of the brigade, an affiliate of the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, he offered to help with anti-aircraft operations, drawing on his experience of military service. He trained rebels to shoot at aircraft, and then to fire missiles seized from army positions. Appointed as a commander, he led assaults on army posts near the Iraqi border and took part in the siege of a military airport at Hamdan in which 16 soldiers were killed. The sheikh who ordered him to carry out the executions promised him that in heaven he would find 70 maidens “more beautiful than the most beautiful on earth” and “rivers of wine”.
